TWAS-UNESCO
Associate Membership Scheme at Centres of Excellence in the
South |
Grant |
The
Third World Academy of Science (TWAS) - United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) |
Purpose |
1.
The Third World Academy of Sciences in cooperation with UNESCO
instituted a joint Associateship Scheme in 1994 in collaboration
with several Centres of Excellence in the South to enable active
researchers from the South to visit these centres regularly.
Currently over eighty Centres are participating in this scheme
2. The aim of the scheme is to counteract the brain drain by
alleviating the problem of isolation of talented scientists
in developing countries, and strengthen the research programmes
of Centres of Excellence in the South.
|
Nature |
1. Within
this scheme, a number of associates will be selected for each
of the collaborating Centres from among the most eminent and promising
researchers in developing countries, working in the fields of
interest of each centre. The selection will be highly competitive
and the appointment will be made on the basis of merit. Special
consideration will be given to scientists from isolated institutions
in developing countries.
2. The scheme will cover the travel expenses involved with a grant
provided by UNESCO and the Dipartimento per la Cooperazione allo
Sviluppo of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The host
centre will cover the living expenses of the visitors, and provide
all the necessary research facilities. |
Agreement |
1. The
appointment will be made for a fixed period of three years, during
which the associate is entitled to visit the Centre twice for
a period of two to three months each time. Subject to the availability
of funds, the appointment may be renewed for a further term of
three years. During the visit the associate may pursue his/her
own research interests and/or collaborate with the research teams
at the Centre in programmes of common interest.
2. International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) Associates
are not eligible for these appointments. |
